“Why don’t I just stay another week with you, and we can knock out everything on my mom’s to-do list together?” Mac asks me for the third time in as many days.

“We’ve been over this already. You’re needed at the ranch and I think some time apart will do us both good.”

“I don’t agree.”

“I know you don’t, you have expressed this to me at least twice a day now.”

He grunts but keeps rocking us on the swing on the deck as we watch the sunset. He leaves to head back to the ranch tomorrow, and he isn’t happy about leaving me here. I’m not happy for him to go but I think these few weeks apart will do us good.

“You will call me several times a day, right? Tell me everything about your day?”

“Of course. And you will take as many boxes of my stuff that will fit in your truck. I only need my clothes and computer, everything else can go with you.”

“I’m going to unpack them too, might help if it feels like you are actually living at the ranch.”

I can’t help but smile. “Okay.”

“Sage is excited that you agreed.”

“I know, she keeps texting asking me what I need or want for the schoolroom she is setting up. She isn’t even pregnant yet!”

“She’s excited and loves to shop.”

“I can tell. I guess she was in some school store in Dallas yesterday and she asked what theme I wanted the schoolroom in and sent me a picture of this huge aisle of themes. I told her to send me her top three choices and we settled on horses.”

“It was always going to be horses, if you picked anything else, she’d have talked you into the horses and made you feel like it was your choice.”

“Oh, I believe it. Poor Colt, I think she filled up his truck with school stuff for that room.”

“She probably has him hanging it all up today too.”

I laugh.

“I’m going to miss this,” I say softly.

“What?”

“Just relaxing with you at the end of the day.”

“We can do that at the ranch too. It can be an incentive to get your cute, sexy butt out to the ranch sooner.” He kisses the top of my head.
